History

What's your store's history

Our company was founded in 1985 as a fine fashion fabrics store named Silks & More Fine Fabrics by Millie & Floyd Kaiser. It was located in downtown Columbia. We offered a wide variety silks, wools, linens, and other fine fashion fabrics plus a large assortment of fashion sewing classes. In the spring of 1987 we become a White Sewing Machine dealer and added Husqvarna Viking sewing machines in 1988.

We added our first quilting fabrics in 1990 and moved to our current location on Bernadette Drive in 1993 to gain better parking and easier access for our customers. By 2004, the quilting fabrics had begun to dominate our inventory to the point that we had to change our store name to Appletree Quilting Center to better reflect the store we had become. In 2010, we added our large 1800 square foot conference center for larger special events, meetings, and classes. We became a BERNINA Sewing Machine dealer in 2014 and began carrying Handi-Quilter longarm machines in 2015.

Eric and Amy Nelson purchased Appletree Quilting Center in April 2020. Once again expanding our floor space to include another room to house our beautiful Batik collections and our holiday fabrics. We continue to add new and innovative classes for education of new sewing techniques.

We do machine repair for a majority of all domestic sewing machine brands.

What payment options do we accept?

We accept Cash, Check, Mastercard, Visa, American Express, and Discover.

If you want to purchase a sewing machine, we do offer financing through Synchrony Bank with an approved credit application.

Products

What kind of fabrics do we carry?

We carry many bolts of quilting cottons, batiks and flannel. We also carry wide backing fabrics as well as Shannon Cuddle (minky) fabrics in 60" and 90".

What kind of sewing cabinets and furniture do we carry?

We sell Unique Sewing Furniture. They offer a wide variety of beautiful furniture that will help you sew in comfort and keep you organized.

Classes & Special Events

When can I sign up for a class or special event?

Class & Special Event Policies

Your class fee is due at time of registration. This guarantees your place in class. Class size is limited. So please register early. Sometimes a great class will be cancelled because people wait until the last minute to register. Each class needs a minimum enrollment of three students at least five days before it begins or is subject to cancellation.

Full refunds or store credits will be issued only if the class is cancelled by Appletree Quilting Center due to bad weather or insufficient registration. Any class cancellation made by the student must be received 14 days prior to start of the class to receive a refund of store credit less a $5 processing fee. Credit or refunds are not available on special events. You will receive a class supply list upon registration, and we will send an email reminder with supply list attached a few days prior to the beginning of your scheduled class. Students will receive a 15% discount off all regular priced fabrics and notions for class supplies, excludes machine accessories. Please inform the sales personnel that you are buying supplies for a class.

We truly appreciate your support when purchasing class supplies from Appletree Quilting Center. No other quilt shop in the Mid-Missouri area offers you the quality and selection of classes and fabrics from which to choose. Bring your own sewing machine to class or you may reserve one of our classroom machines at no additional charge.

Please call ahead if you are unable to attend an individual class session.

Can I get a refund?

Do I need to bring my own sewing machine to class?

Yes, for most classes you need to bring your own sewing machine to class or you may reserve one of our regular class room machines for an additional charge. Classroom machines will vary on availability.

Do I need to come early for class?

Please be prompt. We recommend coming in 15 to 20 minutes before the class starts.

Everyone's time is valuable.

What do I do if I'm unable to make to class due sickness or emergency?

Life does happen and we have no control over it.

If some thing does come up, please call if you are unable to attend a class session.

What are the Recommended Skill Levels for Sewing Classes?

The skill level refers to the sewing experience needed to complete the project within each class category, not the overall sewing experience of the student.

Sewing Machine Guide Lessons

Is there a charge?

If you purchased your machine or software. from Appletree Quilting Center, your guide lessons are FREE!

You may repeat them as often as you like (space permitting).

If you purchased your machine elsewhere and would like to take your guide lessons with Appletree Quilting Center, you must register for the complete set of lessons provided for your particular machine or software.

If the class meets:

1 time - the fee will be $150;
2 times - the fee will be $300;
3 times - the fee will be $450;
or 4 times, the fee will be $600.

Do I need to bring my machine or laptop?

Please bring your machine, manual, foot control, power cord and all the accessories to class.

Embroidery machine owners do need to bring their embroidery units to class until the third week.

For software, please bring your laptop with the current software installed and our dongle to class.

If you need assistance installing your software, please make a special appointment prior to the class dates. We do not have class time for installation.
